Physical Sciences Topics
Grade 10 – 12
A complete, topic-by-topic breakdown of everything covered in Physical Sciences from Grade 10 to Grade 12. For each topic you'll find what the curriculum expects you to understand, the key skills you'll be assessed on, and the essential formulas you need to know.
About the Physical Sciences Curriculum
Physical Sciences in South Africa is a combined subject covering both Physics and Chemistry, assessed across two papers in every formal examination. Paper 1 focuses on Physics (Mechanics, Waves, Electricity and Magnetism) while Paper 2 covers Chemistry (Matter and Materials, Chemical Change).
The curriculum follows the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), which specifies exactly what learners must know and be able to do at each grade level. The Annual Teaching Plan (ATP) sequences these topics across four school terms each year.
Paper 1 — Physics
Mechanics, Waves & Sound, Electricity & Magnetism, Optical Phenomena.
Paper 2 — Chemistry
Matter & Materials, Chemical Change.
SBA Practicals
Two formal experiments per year (one Physics, one Chemistry) count towards School-Based Assessment. Practical skills are also tested in exams.
Cognitive Levels
Questions range from recall (level 1) through comprehension and application (levels 2–3) to analysis and evaluation (level 4). Higher grades have more level 3–4 questions.
